Join us for a 5K! Be The Match April 12th. BTM has a national race series, 2014 is the 1st year in Chicago. BTM is jumping into the Chicago scene in a big way, by having a bone marrow donor and recipient meet prior to the race and walk together. Recipient Ron Oppedisano is the village president of the small Chicago suburb of Norridge, IL. Donor Samantha Seals is flying from Houston to meet her recipient for the first time.
The Walk+Run also supports patients searching for a bone marrow match, like 5-year-old Ava Lee from Chicago. Ava was diagnosed just weeks ago on 2.28th. She is of Asian heritage and has severe allergies. Ava is a cutie and her mom Esther Lee is well informed about Ava’s condition and options. Ava was diagnosed on 2.28th with extremely rare mixed lineage leukemia. A transplant could cure her. Her ethnic background, which is half Korean and half Taiwanese, increases the difficulty of finding a perfect match. Esther has been hosting Be The Match Registry drives in her community to help find Ava a match.
